Origin and Scope

Guide to authors

Australian Entomologist continues the journal originally founded as Australian Entomological Magazine by Max Moulds in 1974. It was passed to the Entomological Society of Queensland in 1988 and was renamed in 1994. It is primarily devoted to papers (of up to 20 printed pages) and short notes on the insects and related fauna of Australia (and associated islands) and neighbouring territories east of Wallace's Line, such as Sulawesi, the Moluccas, New Guinea, New Zealand and islands of the southwestern Pacific. Papers from territories west of Wallace's Line, such as the remainder of Indonesia and Malaysia, may be considered if deemed of relevance to the Australian fauna. Papers on the biology of insects of any order are especially welcomed, and the Journal has a well-established emphasis on the taxonomy, biology and distribution patterns of Australian butterflies. All papers will be forwarded to two referees and the editor reserves the right to reject any paper considered unsuitable. Papers of a purely economic or statistical nature are rarely accepted.

Submission of manuscripts. Manuscripts should be submitted in Microsoft Word in English using Australian/UK spellings and grammar. All authors must have seen and approved the original and any subsequently revised versions. All submitted work must be that of the authors and must not have been published or simultaneously offered for publication elsewhere. The names and contact details of two reviewers should be provided. See the Guide to Authors for details on submission. Submitted manuscripts not complying with this Guide to Authors will be returned to the author for revision.

Manuscripts and illustrations may be sent to the Editor via email: australianentomologist@gmail.com (preferred).  If files are too large to send as an email attachment, please contact the Editor at the above email address and a private Google Drive folder will be created for you to upload your submission.

ESQ Calendar

Each year we produce a calendar featuring photos of insects and other invertebrates in full colour. Each calendar page comes with an A4 sized colour photo and educational text. Members are eligible to submit photos to the calendar photo competition each year and the winning entries are featured in the calendar for the upcoming year. The calendar photo competition details are announced in the news bulletin and calendars are usually available for sale in late October/November.

Beetle Photoguide Reprint and Refresh

First published in 2019, the popular beetle photoguide by the late Geoff Monteith (now featuring on the cover) and Colleen Foelz is back after being out of stock for almost a year. The guide's expanded title "Beetles of Brisbane and south-east Queensland" better reflects the applicability of the content regionally and it includes a few minor corrections to the original publication. The identification details cover 29 families and the brochure includes 95 colour beetle images.

Copies can be ordered via the order form below for $10 each including postage. Any enquiries, please contact ESQ member, Colleen Foelz at coll@internode.on.net
